Joan Lawson gave members a class on tertiary triads and explaining the importance of shape and size of canvas for each painting.

The club held a workshop in Alloway Church Halls on Saturday 5th October conducted by Joan Lawson who addressed the issues of how to prepare for a painting and structured colour considerations.

 

Joan operates the Robinwood art school and brings huge experience to her teaching. She explained the significance of choosing the right shape and size of canvas for each painting and the importance of sketching out a small proforma of the work to review composition and layout. She showed a technique to transfer the chosen image to your canvas and discussed the importance of setting out a ground colour before you start. In her case she chose a brown colour to suggest suitable tones. She then turned to the importance of colour selection and how to obtain a structured and harmonious range of colours using the secondary and tertiary triads taken from the colour wheel.

 

The class then used their own materials to put the teaching into practice using an image provided to ensure that the painting was illustrating fore -ground, middle ground and background colours. As can be imagined, it was a busy workshop that covered a lot of ground but was thoroughly enjoyed by all.
